The first new music from Naive Set in almost four years finds the band planting flags in new musical territories while staying true to their bona fides, remaining, as MOJO once described them, “classic-indie artisans.” “No Relation / Moving Target” marks the first release by the band on AT EASE, hinting at the range of new music to come.
“No Relation” explores relationships on both the micro and macro level, love and war, concluding “there’s no dotted line when it’s all the same.” Meanwhile, guitarist Jan Schenk adds a dotted morse code rhythm in the guitar, jangly strumming patterns reminiscent of the Velvet Underground or the Feelies.
“Moving Target” takes it down a notch, channeling AM radio and Dylan’s Nashville period. Jan Pieter van Weel, usually driving the songs from behind the drum kit, holds this one together with a twinkling, parlor Piano.
